The Artist

Melbourne artist Rossella Picciani became interested in symbols more than 20 years ago, while working as a graphic designer.

Influences

Picciani draws her inspiration from eastern and western mysticism, Jungian psychology, extinct languages, cartography, scientific notation and information graphics. She then layers these symbols and icons over images of fossils, fragments of landscapes, human figures and plant life.

Techniques

Her work is predominantly acrylic on canvas, which she then embellishes with metallic enamels, coloured varnishes and glass micro-beads to add depth, texture and movement.

"I want each painting to be intriguing whether it's viewed up close or from several metres away."
